Quick answer: We rent two pedal kayaks in Cape Coral: the single Old Town Malibu PDL ($100/day, $350 for 3 to 7 days) and a tandem pedal kayak ($200/day, $400 for 3 to 7 days). Both are delivered free to your dock. A pedal kayak is worth it for distance, fishing and sore shoulders, but not for a quick calm-canal paddle.
Pedal kayaks are the boats people ask about with a little suspicion. Is it a gimmick? Is it just a paddle boat with a rudder? Can I really fish out of it? Will it get stuck in the shallows?
The honest answer: they are excellent for some trips and unnecessary for others. If you are staying at a canal house in Cape Coral and want to explore more than a block or two, or you plan to hold a fishing rod for hours, a pedal kayak changes the day. If you want a 45-minute float behind your rental, save your money and rent a single.
This guide covers how the pedal system works, how to treat shallow water, who benefits from the upgrade, and how the single and tandem versions compare. If you are still deciding between all five of our boats, our pillar guide on which kayak to rent in Cape Coral puts them side by side.

How a pedal kayak works
A pedal kayak has a drive unit mounted through the hull. You push pedals with your feet, the drive turns a propeller under the boat, and you move. Your hands stay free.
On our Old Town Malibu PDL, the system is the PDL Drive. Old Town describes it as an easy-to-use forward and reverse drive, so you can pedal ahead, or pedal the other way to back off a dock, a mangrove root or a piling. Steering is done with a rudder, not your paddle, so you can hold a heading while your hands are busy with a rod or a camera. You can see Old Town’s own description on its Malibu PDL product page.
Two practical points about the drive:
- It is a hull-mounted unit. Old Town’s drive page notes that the lock-down knobs are designed to break on a forceful impact with a submerged rock, root or tree. That tells you it lives below the boat, and that you should respect what is under you.
- It does not travel in the boat. Old Town says the PDL Drive should not be mounted into the boat during transportation. If you plan to car-top a delivered kayak to another launch, text us first so we can tell you how to handle the drive. Details are on Old Town’s PDL Drive information page.
The pedal drive is included in the rental price. You also get a paddle, a life vest, a dry bag and a safety whistle. Keep the paddle handy. A pedal kayak is not a motorboat, and you will use the paddle to nudge into a dock, to hold position in a tight spot and for the shallow stretches below.
The Malibu PDL, by the numbers
Here are the specs from Old Town / Johnson Outdoors for the boat we rent:
| Spec | Old Town Ocean Kayak Malibu PDL |
|---|---|
| Length | 12 ft |
| Width | 34.5 in |
| Weight | About 105 lb (boat), seat 6 lb, pedal console 20 lb |
| Usable capacity | 250 lb (people, gear, pets) |
| Total capacity | 360 lb including boat and pedal console |
| Seat | Removable Element seat, doubles as a beach chair |
| Drive | PDL Drive, pedals forward and reverse |
| Steering | Rudder |
| Rod holders | 3 flush-mount (two behind the seat, one forward-facing) |
At 34.5 inches wide, it is wide enough to feel stable when you shift your weight, which matters when you are reaching for a rod or turning to look at a dolphin. It is a sit-on-top recreation kayak, so water drains off and you can climb back on after a swim.
The 250 lb usable capacity is the number to watch. It counts you, your gear and any pets, not the boat. If you are anywhere near it, text us before booking. Our general guidance is that individual paddlers should be 250 lb or less.
You can book it on our single pedal kayak page. Pricing is $100 for 1 day, $200 for 2 days and $350 for 3 to 7 days.
Tandem pedal kayak
Our tandem pedal kayak is designed for two paddlers. It includes two paddles, two life vests, a dry bag and a safety whistle. Pricing is $200 for 1 day, $300 for 2 days and $400 for 3 to 7 days.
It is the boat for two adults who want to cover real water together with pedal power doing the work instead of your arms and shoulders. Text us if you want to know how the pedal setup works for each seat before you book. If you want to know how a standard paddle tandem handles, including who sits where, read our tandem kayaking guide.
Any two-person pedal boat is big and heavy, so this is a dock-launch boat. Moving it by hand is a two-person job.
Pedal from your own dock this week
We deliver the Malibu PDL and the tandem pedal kayak free to your Cape Coral or Fort Myers dock, with pickup included. Single pedal from $100/day, tandem pedal from $200/day, and rentals of 3 to 7 days are one flat price.
Single pedal vs tandem pedal
| Single pedal (Malibu PDL) | Tandem pedal | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 day | $100 | $200 |
| 2 days | $200 | $300 |
| 3 to 7 days | $350 | $400 |
| People | 1 | 2 |
| Cost per person, 1 day | $100 | $100 |
| Cost per person, 3 to 7 days | $350 | $200 |
| Best for | Solo trips, anglers, photographers | Couples, two adults, friends covering distance |
| Rod holders | 3 flush-mount | Not sold as a fishing rig (text us to ask) |
The math is the interesting part. For one day, the tandem pedal ($200) costs exactly the same as two single pedal kayaks ($200 total). For a week it is not close: the tandem pedal is $400, and two Malibu PDLs would be $700. If two adults want pedals for more than a day, the tandem is the better deal. The difference in feel is more important. A single lets you go at your own pace and fish on your own line. A tandem keeps you together, and you can talk the whole way, but you commit to one heading and one speed. If you two disagree about where to go, you will notice.

Shallow water: what to watch for
This is the part most rental pages skip, so I will be direct.
A pedal drive hangs below the hull, and a paddle does not. Old Town’s product and drive pages do not publish a minimum water depth for the PDL Drive, so we will not give you a number we cannot back up. What we can say is how we treat it.
- If you can see the bottom coming up, stop pedaling and paddle. That goes double over seagrass and oyster bars, which are common in southwest Florida estuaries. Florida’s aquatic preserves guidance for Matlacha Pass warns against running boats through shallow seagrass, and it describes oyster bars and seagrass flats outside the marked channel. See the Matlacha Pass Aquatic Preserve page.
- Know your tide. A canal that is fine at high tide can be skinny on the edges at low tide. Check predictions at NOAA Tides and Currents before you head out.
- Do not force it. If something grabs the drive, stop and back up with reverse. The drive is designed with breakaway knobs for a reason.
- Ask us about your canal. When you book, tell us your address and we can usually point out where the water gets thin and where it opens up.
One thing I will say plainly: we have not found Old Town documentation that explains how to raise or remove the PDL Drive while you are on the water, so do not plan around it. If you want to explore skinny creeks or the flats, rent a paddle kayak instead. Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve, on the Caloosahatchee just north of the Midpoint Memorial Bridge, has creeks and an 800-foot portage on its paddling trail, according to the City of Cape Coral. That is paddle territory. You can drive your delivered kayak there yourself if you have safe transport, but we do not deliver to the preserve or any park.
Is a pedal kayak worth it?
Here is the honest breakdown. The pedal upgrade costs $55 more than a single for one day ($100 against $45), and $230 more for 3 to 7 days ($350 against $120). That is a real cost, so make it earn its keep.
Who should pay for the upgrade
- Anyone planning more than two or three hours. Legs outlast shoulders. After the second hour of paddling, many people are done. On pedals, they are just getting going.
- Paddlers with shoulder, wrist, elbow or back problems. Pedaling moves the work to your legs.
- Anglers who want to hold a position. You can cast, retrieve and reposition without dropping the rod to grab a paddle.
- Photographers and birders. Hands free means camera up, binoculars up, kayak still moving. Osprey, brown pelicans and roseate spoonbills do not wait for you to stow a paddle.
- Anyone fighting wind or current. On a windy afternoon on the Caloosahatchee, a pedal drive and rudder hold a heading better, in our experience, than a paddle does for most people.
Who should not
- Anyone paddling a calm canal for an hour or less. A single ($45) does that job just fine.
- Anyone who wants to poke around shallow creeks, flats and mangrove tunnels. Get a paddle kayak.
- Anyone with a knee that hurts on a bike. If pedaling a bike hurts, pedaling a kayak will too.
So, pedal kayak vs paddle kayak: pedal wins on range, comfort and hands-free tasks, while paddle wins on price, weight, simplicity and shallow-water freedom. Neither is better in the abstract. It is a question of what you plan to do.
Fishing from a pedal kayak
This is where the Malibu PDL earns most of its fans. It has three flush-mount rod holders, two behind the seat and one forward-facing. Pedaling in reverse lets you back off structure, and the rudder keeps you pointed where you want.
Cape Coral canals hold snook, redfish, spotted seatrout, sheepshead and mangrove snapper, depending on the season. Snook like seawalls and dock shadows, and being able to hold position along a seawall with your feet while casting is a real advantage. You can read species and seasonal detail in our Cape Coral kayak fishing guide.
Rods, tackle, bait and licensing are on you. Check Florida fishing rules at the FWC fishing page. If you want a stable, cheaper fishing platform and do not mind paddling, our fishing kayak is $60 a day. Pedaling is a luxury, not a requirement.
How far you can go from a canal home
I will not give you a “you can go X miles” figure, because it depends on your address, your canal, the wind and the tide, and any number I put here would be a guess. Here is how to think about it instead.
Cape Coral has more than 400 miles of canals, and many connect to each other. Where you can go depends on which canal you are on. Some canals lead to the Gulf side and the Caloosahatchee River, and some do not. Our canals guide explains how to read your canal map.
Start with an out-and-back plan. Pedal out for a time you can repeat on the way home, because the wind or tide may be against you coming back. A good first outing is an hour out and an hour back.
If your canal reaches the Caloosahatchee, remember that it is a wider, busier stretch with wakes and wind chop. The Cape Coral Bridge, with two parallel spans of about 3,400 feet, gives you a sense of scale. Stay close to shore, wear your life vest, check the NWS Tampa Bay forecast and see our wind and tide guide. Open water is the place a tandem pedal’s range helps, and also the place where beginners should be most careful.
Staying in Fort Myers? We deliver there too (see our Fort Myers kayak rentals page). For dock-launch technique, read how to get in and out of a kayak from a dock or seawall.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a pedal kayak rental cost in Cape Coral?
Our single pedal kayak, the Old Town Malibu PDL, is $100 for 1 day, $200 for 2 days and $350 for 3 to 7 days. The tandem pedal kayak is $200, $300 and $400 for the same periods. Prices include taxes, free delivery and pickup in Cape Coral and most of Fort Myers, and a cash discount is available.
Can I find pedal kayak rentals near me in Cape Coral?
If you are staying at a waterfront home, Airbnb or VRBO in Cape Coral or most of Fort Myers, yes. We deliver a pedal kayak to your dock and pick it up afterward. We do not have a storefront and we do not deliver to parks or boat ramps, so you launch from private property.
Is a pedal kayak worth it?
For trips longer than two or three hours, fishing, photography or sore shoulders, yes. For a short paddle on a calm canal, a regular single at $45 a day is enough. The pedal single costs $55 more than a regular single for one day and $230 more for 3 to 7 days.
What is the difference between a pedal kayak and a paddle kayak?
A pedal kayak moves with foot pedals that turn a propeller and uses a rudder to steer, leaving your hands free. A paddle kayak uses your arms and shoulders. Pedal wins on range and comfort, and paddle wins on price, weight and shallow-water freedom.
Can a pedal kayak go in shallow water?
Not as well as a paddle kayak. The drive hangs below the hull, and Old Town does not publish a minimum depth. If you can see seagrass or oyster shell close to the surface, stop pedaling and use the paddle. Check tides before you go.
Can you go backward in a pedal kayak?
Yes, on the Old Town Malibu PDL. The PDL Drive pedals forward and reverse, so you can back away from a dock, a mangrove root or a piling without switching to the paddle. A rudder handles steering.
Can you fish from a pedal kayak?
Yes. The Malibu PDL has three flush-mount rod holders and a stable 34.5 inch beam, and pedaling keeps your hands free. Bring your own rods, tackle and any required fishing license. If you prefer a lower price, our paddle fishing kayak is $60 a day.
How much weight can the Malibu PDL carry?
Old Town lists 250 lb of usable capacity for people, gear and pets, and 360 lb total including the boat and pedal console. Our general guidance is that individual paddlers should be 250 lb or less. Text us if you are near the limit.
Is a tandem pedal kayak cheaper than two single pedal kayaks?
For one day they cost the same: $200. For 3 to 7 days the tandem pedal is $400, and two single pedal kayaks are $700. If two adults want pedals for more than a day, the tandem is the better price.
Do pedal kayaks come with a paddle and life vest?
Yes. Every rental includes a paddle (two for the tandem), life vests, a dry bag and a safety whistle, and the pedal drive is included in the price. Keep the paddle with you, because you will want it near docks and shallow edges.
Ready to pedal from your own dock?
