Quick answer: A tandem kayak suits couples and a parent paddling with a child. Ours rents for $60 a day, $100 for 2 days or $180 for 3 to 7 days, with free delivery to your Cape Coral dock. Choose two singles if you disagree on pace, or the tandem pedal ($200/day) for distance and sore shoulders.
A tandem kayak is one of the few boats where the people matter as much as the hull. Put two paddlers who find a rhythm in a double and they glide down a canal talking the whole way. Put two who do not in the same boat and you get a zigzag, a few pointed comments and a very quiet ride home.
When I deliver a tandem to a canal home in Cape Coral, I usually see the same moment. Two people look at the dock, look at the kayak and then look at each other with a face that says “who is steering?” This guide answers that question, along with the rest of the ones that come up before and after you get on the water.
It covers who sits where, how to paddle in sync, how to set up a parent and child, when two singles are the better call, and a few canal-loop ideas you can try from your own dock. If you are still choosing between all of our boats, start with the pillar guide on which kayak to rent in Cape Coral.

Who sits where
The back seat (the stern) does most of the steering. The front seat (the bow) sets the pace and spots what is ahead. So the general rule is simple:
- Stronger or heavier paddler in back. More steering power sits where it is needed, and it keeps the boat balanced.
- Lighter or less experienced paddler in front. Their job is to paddle at a steady rhythm and call out anything interesting: a manatee, a dolphin, a stick, a boat wake.
- Spread the weight. If one person is a lot heavier than the other, a very light bow tends to ride high and catch the wind. Put dry bags and water in the middle, not the end.
Each paddler should be 250 lb or less as a general guideline, and total capacity varies by kayak. If either of you is near that number, or you are bringing a cooler and a lot of gear, text us before you book and we will confirm the boat. Our tandem kayak page has the details, including what comes with each rental: two paddles, two life vests, a dry bag and a safety whistle.
Paddling in sync
Most tandem trouble comes from timing. Here is how to avoid it.
- The bow sets the rhythm. The back paddler matches the front paddler’s strokes, because the stern can see the bow paddle and the bow cannot see the stern.
- Paddle on opposite sides to start. When one paddle goes in on the left, the other goes in on the right. Switching sides together once in a while keeps arms from getting tired.
- Keep the strokes low and short. A high, wide swing flings water into the person behind you and clashes paddles.
- Use one signal word. “Switch” or “stop” works. Agree on it on the dock.
- The stern steers. To turn, the back paddler does most of the work with sweeping strokes while the bow keeps paddling steadily or pauses. Do not both try to steer at once. That is how you end up going in a circle.
Most pairs find their groove in about ten minutes in a calm canal. If you do not, stop, float, laugh at yourselves and try again. A tandem tracks straighter than a single once it is moving, but it turns more slowly, so give yourselves room at dead ends.
Getting in is the other tricky bit. Board one person at a time, with the boat held snug against the dock or seawall, and keep your weight low and centered. We walk through the whole thing in our guide on how to get in and out of a kayak from a dock or seawall.
Parent and child setups
A tandem is the best way to take a young child on the water, because you are right there. Here is the setup I recommend.
- Adult in back, child in front. The adult steers and can see the child. The child gets a paddle for fun, and the adult does the real work.
- Life jackets on before you step on the dock. Our rentals come with life vests, and we provide them for all ages. Florida requires a wearable, Coast Guard approved life jacket for each person aboard (see the FWC boating regulations). A snug fit matters more than a nice color.
- Keep it short. Thirty to sixty minutes is plenty for a first trip. Quit while everyone is still happy.
- Stay close to your dock. You want to get a tired or fussy child home in minutes. Pack water, snacks, sunscreen and hats.
Our rental page asks that riders 17 or younger be accompanied by an adult. If your child is very small, or you are unsure whether they will sit still in the front seat, text us before booking. We will tell you honestly whether a tandem is the right boat. For more on pacing, wildlife and safety with children, read our guide to kayaking with kids in Cape Coral.
A tandem kayak at your dock, from $60 a day
We deliver our tandem kayak free to your Cape Coral or Fort Myers dock, with two paddles, two life vests, a dry bag and a whistle. Pickup is included, and 3 to 7 days is one flat $180.
Tandem vs two singles
A tandem is not automatically better. Most “single or tandem?” texts come down to how two people get along on the water.
| Two people | 1 day | 2 days | 3 to 7 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| One tandem | $60 | $100 | $180 |
| Two singles | $90 | $160 | $240 |
Choose the tandem if:
- You want to talk, take photos together and stay side by side the whole trip.
- One of you is less confident and wants a partner right there.
- You are a parent with a young child.
- You want to save money. A tandem costs $30 less per day than two singles.
Choose two singles if:
- You paddle at very different speeds, or one of you wants to explore while the other wants to float.
- One of you wants to fish. A single or our fishing kayak gives you the room.
- You want to turn in tight canals. A single turns faster.
People call the double kayak the “divorce boat,” and the joke lands because there is a grain of truth in it. If you already argue about who is reading the map in the car, consider paying the extra $30. It is cheap marriage insurance. You can also paddle two singles side by side, and talk just fine, so long as the water is calm.
For how all five of our boats compare on price and use, see the Cape Coral kayak rental prices guide. If you are just starting out, the first-time kayaker’s guide will also help.
The tandem pedal option
If you like the idea of a double but not the idea of paddling it for hours, look at our tandem pedal kayak. It is $200 for 1 day, $300 for 2 days and $400 for 3 to 7 days, and it includes two paddles, two life vests, a dry bag and a whistle.
Here is how it compares with the paddle tandem:
| Paddle tandem | Tandem pedal | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 day | $60 | $200 |
| 3 to 7 days | $180 | $400 |
| Power | Your arms and shoulders | Pedal power |
| Hands free | No | Yes |
| Best for | Short, calm outings; budget trips | Longer outings, windier water, sore shoulders |
The paddle tandem is the better value for an hour or two in a calm canal. The tandem pedal earns its price when you want range, when one of you has an arm, shoulder or wrist that does not love paddling, or when you want your hands free for a camera or binoculars. Our pedal kayak guide covers shallow-water cautions and who should pay the upgrade.
Canal-loop ideas from your dock
Cape Coral has more than 400 miles of canals, and most are navigable. Where you can go depends on the canal behind your house. Some canals connect to the Gulf side and the Caloosahatchee River, and some do not. I will not claim distances for your address, but here are four patterns that work from almost any canal home. Our canals guide for kayakers explains how to read your map before you go.
1. The block loop
Canals in Cape Coral run in grids. Paddle out your canal, turn onto a cross canal, then come back along the next parallel canal if it connects. Check a map app first, and turn around if a canal dead-ends.
2. The out-and-back sunset sit
Pick a wide intersection about 20 minutes away, paddle there, drift and watch the sky, then return. This works in the late afternoon in cooler months and is easy with a partner in a tandem. Bring a light if you might be out near dusk, and see our sunset and sunrise kayaking guide for timing.
3. The seawall and mangrove edge crawl
Paddle slowly along the shaded side of a canal. Mangrove edges and docks hold birds such as ospreys and brown pelicans, and manatees visit canals, especially when the water cools. Keep a respectful distance from wildlife and let animals move away on their own terms. See the FWC boating regulations for current rules.
4. The river peek
If your canal opens onto the Caloosahatchee River, paddle a short stretch along the shoreline and turn around. The Cape Coral Bridge, whose two parallel spans are each about 3,400 feet long, makes a good visual landmark. The river is wider, with boat wakes and more wind, so choose a calm day, keep your life vests on and stay close to shore. Check the NWS Tampa Bay forecast and tide predictions at NOAA Tides and Currents, and read our guide to wind, tides and weather in Cape Coral. A beginner pair in a paddle tandem should not push this one.
If you have a roof rack or truck and want a different setting, you can drive your delivered kayak to another launch yourself. We do not deliver to parks or boat ramps. One example is Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve, just north of the Midpoint Memorial Bridge on the Caloosahatchee. The City of Cape Coral notes that its kayak trail is intricate and includes an 800-foot portage, so it is not a beginner or small-child outing (City of Cape Coral kayaking page). Look at that page for current access rules before you go.
Tandem tips that save arguments
- Decide the destination on the dock. Arguing from the water is harder.
- Have a bailout plan. If one of you is tired, turn around. No heroics.
- Use the dry bag. Phones and keys go in it, and it stays in the middle of the boat.
- Booking for several days? The 3 to 7 day rate is a flat $180, so a week costs the same as three days. See weekly kayak rentals and the vacation rental delivery page if you are in an Airbnb or VRBO.
Safety basics for any boat are in our kayak safety guide.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to rent a tandem kayak in Cape Coral?
Our tandem kayak is $60 for 1 day, $100 for 2 days and $180 for 3 to 7 days. That includes taxes, two paddles, two life vests, a dry bag, a safety whistle, free delivery and pickup in Cape Coral and most of Fort Myers. A cash discount is available.
Can I find a double kayak rental near me in Cape Coral?
If you are staying at a waterfront home, Airbnb, VRBO or condo with suitable storage in Cape Coral or most of Fort Myers, we deliver a tandem to you. We have no storefront or onsite paddling, and we do not deliver to public parks or boat ramps.
Who should sit in the back of a tandem kayak?
The stronger or heavier paddler. The back seat does most of the steering, and the extra weight helps balance the boat. The person in front sets the rhythm and watches for obstacles and wildlife.
Is a tandem kayak good for beginners?
Yes, in calm water. A tandem is stable and lets a nervous beginner paddle next to a more confident partner. Keep the first trip short, pick a calm canal, and agree on who steers. If you two disagree a lot, two singles may be friendlier.
Is a tandem kayak better than two single kayaks?
Cheaper, yes: $60 against $90 for a day. Better depends on you. A tandem keeps you together and suits couples and parent-and-child trips, while two singles give each person independence and turn faster in tight canals.
Can I take my child in a tandem kayak?
Often yes. Seat the adult in back and the child in front, put life jackets on first and keep the trip short and close to the dock. Our site asks that riders 17 or younger be accompanied by an adult. If your child is very small, text us before booking.
How do you paddle in sync in a tandem kayak?
The front paddler sets the rhythm and the back paddler matches it. Paddle on opposite sides at first, keep strokes short and low, and agree on a signal word like “switch” or “stop.” The back paddler does most of the steering.
How much weight can a tandem kayak hold?
Individual paddlers should generally be 250 lb or less, and total capacity varies by kayak. If either paddler or your gear is near the limit, text us and we will confirm the best option.
What is the difference between a tandem kayak and a tandem pedal kayak?
A paddle tandem is powered by your arms and costs $60 a day. The tandem pedal is powered by pedals, leaves your hands free and costs $200 a day. The paddle tandem suits short calm trips, and the pedal version suits distance and sore shoulders.
Ready to paddle together from your own dock?
Text us your dates and delivery address and we will confirm the tandem for your stay. Free delivery in Cape Coral and most of Fort Myers, pickup included, from $60 a day.
